"Thanksgiving
Cobbler”
(Story)
In my
early years in Alaska, we usually celebrated Thanksgiving with friends. A
bunch of us would gather in a friend’s home, and have a pot luck
Thanksgiving.

Dan and me with his
parents in 1986 |
After we moved to
Washington
State it became a tradition to celebrate Thanksgiving with Dan’s parents,
his Aunt and her family. His parents, aunt and uncle are all gone now.
The cousins live in far away States. Dan and I now spend Thanksgiving on
our own. I cook up a much smaller feast and reminisce about past
Thanksgivings with loved ones.
For our traditional family Thanksgiving dinner, I usually baked
the turkey; Aunt Ethel contributed her "secret" cranberry relish and
delicious bean dish. Dan’s Dad’s contribution was his unique salad and
the corn from his garden. His mother, who was an absolutely marvelous
cook, took care of the rest of the meal.
Her specialty was baking: breads, pies, rolls, biscuits, muffins,
cobblers, you name it. Never having had a normal childhood with a loving
family and relatives, these traditional family get-togethers meant very
much to her. She was one of the kindest and most loving persons I ever
knew.
After dinner, we caught up on happenings in each others’ lives.
Dad and Mom would share their stories about the goings on in the church
(Dan’s Dad was a retired pastor then) and talk about their prolific
garden. His cousins, all working or studying in universities, would tell
us about life in their academic world. Dan and I would share stories
about our work. We would discuss world affairs, and reminisce about our
travels and share fond memories of life in
Alaska,
where all of us had lived for much of our lives.
Before heading home we shared the leftovers and made sure that we
did not forget to pack Mom’s baked goodies.
